Albert Cole was born into a famous circus family in 1869 and began his career as a performer at age 3. He performed with many different shows including the Montgomery Green Circus, the Anderson's & Co. Circus, the Cole Circus (owned by his father), the Hagenbeck and Wallace Circus, and many others. Later in life Cole worked as circus promoter. The present archive of photographs, many presented to Cole by the performers themselves, documents both his life as a performer and promoter. Many of the photographs have been identified by Cole in ink on the face of the images or on verso. A unique and important archive of American Circus life assembled by own of its well-loved characters.
