LAMBARDE, William (1536-1601). Eirenarcha: or of the Office of the Justices of Peace, in two bookes . London: Ra. Newbery and H. Bynneman, by the ass. of Ri. Tot[tell] & Chr. Bar[ker], 1581. Small 8° (156 x 99mm). Title within historiated woodcut border, full-page woodcut coat-of-arms on verso, full-page woodcut printer's device on recto of final leaf, woodcut and historiated initials (part of woodcut title damaged caused being stuck onto pastedown, partly affecting woodcut border and 2 letters of text, title and T1 recto very soiled, a few ink stains on T5 verso, scribbling in margin of T6 recto, outer margin of Y3 partly torn away, lower corner of last few leaves frayed, not affecting text, some light soiling and some waterstaining). Contemporary vellum (very soiled, spine with 3 small holes, lacking ties). Provenance : Johnson (early ownership inscription on margin of title); John Leftwich (old ownership inscription verso of last leaf). FIRST EDITION. 'Written in a clear and unaffected style this manual (i.e. Eirenarcha ) remained for a long time the standard authority; Judge Blackstone speaks favourably of this work, and recommends it to the perusal of students.' ( DNB ). STC 15163.
