LAFRERI, Antonio (1512-1577). Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae , Rome:] Joannes Orlandi (and others), plates dated 1582-1602 . 2° (407 x 280mm.). Double-page engraved map of Rome and 100 double-page or folding plates of Roman architecture, monuments, statues, obelisks, reliefs etc. by Lafréry, Duchet and others, a few plates extracted from a later work laid down at the end. (Without the engraved title published in 1575, some plates torn and repaired, some staining and fraying). Later calf-backed boards (worn). Provenance : copious early annotation on pastedowns. The Speculum was a publisher's collection of prints illustrating the architecture and sculpture of Ancient and Renaissance Rome, produced to appeal to the wealthy pilgrim or tourist who wanted to take home a pictorial record of their visit. Each set is a unique compilation and for this reason this set is sold not subject to return.
