Engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette at head of dedication, 14 engraved plates and engraved folding world map. (Volume I: Ee1 with short marginal tear, xxx2 with 3-inch tear just crossing text block, NNnn2-3 partially parted, occasional small wormholes near gutter; Volume II: first blank remargined and with old repaired tear, title with chip at upper fore-corner, D2 with 2-inch marginal tear on lower fore-corner, Cc3 with small marginal acid hole, both with occasional pale spotting). Provenance : George Earl Church (manuscript note in pencil on verso of first blank, "this was 2 d copy of the George Earl Church Collection."). FIRST EDITION, with the world map tracing the voyages of Vasco da Gama, Cabral and Magellan. Despite the promise of the title, the work chiefly relates the discoveries and conquests made by the Portuguese in Asia and Africa. "It is, however, an esteemed and well-written work" (Sabin).
