Autograph letter signed "Lafayette" to John C. Carter arranging a visit .
Paris, 18 June [1832]. 1 page, with integral address leaf (8 x 6 ¼ inches, 200x157mm). Condition: Some ink burn holes on the address leaf, hole from opening at the gutter, usual folds. Corresponding with John C. Carter (1805-1870) American naval officer who at the time of this letter was serving in the Mediterranean squadron, Lafayette writes: “I would be much disappointed to loose [sic] the welcome opportunity to see you before you leave town. This day has been employ'd from nine o'clock in the morning to engagements abroad of public and various nature. I am obliged to go out tomorrow at half past eight but be returned at eleven and will be happy to see you at that hour…” Carter would go on to serve aboard the steamer Mississippi during the Mexican War and on the steamer Michigan during the Civil War. He was commissioned as commodore on the retired list in 1867.
