Paris: Dabo, 1817. 3 volumes: comprising 2 volumes text, 4° (297 x 225 mm) and atlas 2° (520 x 335mm). Half-titles, atlas with engraved title, folding engraved map, 43 engraved plates. (Marginal tear to I.Kk3 but without loss, engraved title in atlas with creasefolds, a couple of plates with very minor marginal nicks and tears, variable spotting and browning, more heavily affecting last few plates in atlas.) Uniformly bound in later 19th-century half purple morocco, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others uncut (extremities lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION of the text volumes and a later issue of the atlas. In the search for La Pérouse under the command of D'Entrecasteaux, Australia was circumnavigated twice, surveys were made of the coasts of Tasmania, New Caledonia, the north coast of New Guinea, south-west coast of Australia, the Tonga and other islands in the vain hope of recovering some relics of La Pérouse's expedition. The plates in the atlas depict views, the natives of the Admiralty Islands, Tasmania, New Zealand, the Friendly Islands and New Caledonia, native implements and canoes, birds, plants, etc. 13 of the botanical plates are after or finished by Pierre-Joseph Redouté. The text, also simultaneously issued in octavo, is here in quarto format.
