[Amsterdam, 1673?]. Small 2 o (265 x 171 mm). 42 engravings by Romeyn de Hooghe typographical ornament borders (borders shaved). 19th-century English half calf with L-shaped corners (rubbed). Provenance : Beckford Library (sold 11 December 1882, lot 883); acquired from Maggs Bros., 1998. VERY RARE ISSUE of De Hooghe's illustrated study of the Art of Dying Well. Landwehr was apparently unaware of this edition and records only the French version of 42 leaves printed on one side of the leaf only, and a Dutch version which consists of 24 leaves printed on both sides (as in this edition). In a footnote to the 1700 Spanish edition, Peeters-Fontainas remarks that the work was approved by Fray Ximenez Samaniego and that permission was given in 1673 to translate the work from Spanish into other languages, indicating that this Spanish version must have been the first to appear. Consequently, the plates in this issue are in the earliest state and are remarkably fresh. Not in Palau. Landwehr, De Hooghe 27.
