THE AUCTION CATALOGUE OF ONE OF THE FINEST PRIVATE LIBRARIES EVER FORMED , whose descriptions influenced French and English collectors, and bibliographers such as Brunet, for many decades. Priced throughout in a contemporary hand, this copy also has, bound-in, a 14-page manuscript copy of the letter sent by Desaunoys, keeper of the King’s Library, to Rive concerning the suitability of this collection, together with Rive’s answers. This first part contained the most valuable books; a second part was published, but never auctioned: it was sold en bloc to the Marquis de Paulmy, who resold it to the future Charles X. De Bure's notes for the incunabula were especially competent, and the catalogue's treatment of medieval manuscripts presaged Van Praet's great career as expert and successively royal, national, imperial and again royal librarian. Taylor, p. 248.
