A SUPERB RANGE OF BURGUNDIES, FROM FASCINATING DOMAINES This is a collector after my own heart. He made his first trip to Burgundy in the late 1960s, when I was living there, picking grapes, rolling barrels and visiting growers for the first time. Almost all the Domaines in his collection are like old friends, where I have known three generations of wine-makers. When he discovered them, many of his chosen growers were just starting their family's rise to stardom. He wasn't buying to hoard, or to re-sell, he was buying to drink and share his bottles - which is why the 4 bottles of 1959's got drunk, and so did the few 66's and 69's he could then afford to buy. Drinking great bottles is the best way to hone your palate, to become a canny buyer. And the knowledge he gained, he put to buying larger quantities, as soon as he was able to afford them. Which is where this great collection comes alive. Just as Burgundy was hitting its new, Golden Era, from 1988 onwards, his buying became expansive. There is superb depth of wines from the great vintages of the 1990s, which will delight any collector wishing to fill gaps in her or his cellar, or embarking on a start-up collection. Here are magnificent opportunities to assemble comparatives of Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux from Emmanuel Rouget and from Méo-Camuzet. And to buy large formats of what is arguably Faiveley's greatest, long-living bottling : Corton Clos des Cortons-Faiveley. This is even less approachable than Clos de Bèze when youthful - but we have vintages going back to 1985, including large formats - so you do not need to wait ! There are also 6 vintages of Faiveley's Chambertin Clos de Bèze, including 1990 and 1985. "I have more wine than I am going to drink in my lifetime" says our collector, which prompted the thinning-out. There are mouth-watering runs of Le Montrachet from Marc Colin and Guy Amiot, from 2002 back through 5 vintages. Sourcing Montrachet is always difficult, and mature Montrachet, even more so. There are swathes of Leroy through 8 vintages (1997 to 1989) as well as Méo-Camuzet (2003 back to 1995). There are jewels from Etienne Sauzet, Bruno Clair, Michel Gros and Ponsot. There are sprinklings of DRC and Domaine d'Auvenay, Fichet, Michel Lafarge, Henri Gouges, de Montille, Vincent Dauvissat and Jean-Marc Boillot, and many more. His canny buying means he has accumulated some of Burgundy's most sought-after collectibles. I recommend that Burgundy lovers look closely at these selections, for many bottles look completely irresistible.
