Half-titles. (Occasional light browning.) Contemporary red morocco gilt by Derome le Jeune with his ticket in volume I, spine compartments with ruled and pointillé divisions, directly lettered in two, the other four with repeated geometric ornament, triple fillets on sides, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, green silk markers, gilt edges (light rubbing to corners, upper cover of vol. VI with light scuff mark and rubbing to one edge). Provenance : A.C. McLaughlin (bookplate; sale Sotheby's Monaco 7 October 1980, lot 1790). THE DIDOT EDITION ON FINE PAPER COMPLEMENTED BY A CHARMING DEROME BINDING. The ticket gives the binder's address at rue St Jacques près le Collége du Plessis, Hôtel de la Couture. No. 65 en 1785'. The first edition of La Force's historical novel had appeared in 1696 in only two 12° volumes. In this edition, the last two volumes are editorial. Brunet III, 763; Quérard II, 87. (6)
