Paris: Chez I'Auteur, [1761]. 4to. (12 1/2 x 9 inches; 320 x 230mm.). Engraved title, dedication, explanation leaf and 80pp. engraved music, 1p. advertisements. Contemporary paste paper boards, rebacked with parchment, facsimile paper spine label, all edges stained red. Condition : Front blank supplied, covers rubbed. Provenance : John Kilty (signed and dated 1785 on title), Le Chevalier de Vrecourt (signatures on title). Joseph Barnabe Saint-Sevin L'Abbe (1727-1803), child prodigy from a musical family, entered the orchestra of the Comedie-Francaise at twelve, joined the Opera at sixteen, becoming perhaps the premier violinist of his time. His uncle Pierre Saint-Sevin L'Abbe, was himself a renowned musician in France, and his father, Pierre Phillipe Sain-Sevin L'Abbe, was also a violoncellist and a member of the Opera. "The musical gifts of 'L'Abbe Ie fils'", as he was called, were highly appreciated by contemporary opinion. He played at the Concert Spirituel from 1741 to 1755. Owing to the particularly high standard of his technique, he largely contributed to the development of violin execution in France. An interesting innovation of his was the writing out of cadenzas" (Groves). He is chiefly remembered for his pedagogical work "Principes du Violon" (presented here), considered to be one of the earliest and best violin instruction books. a scarce work . One of the earliest and most important violin instruction books. ABPC records no copies appearing at auction in the last thirty years and OCLC locates only a single copy with the author's imprint (NYPL), with the remaining five records noted bearing the imprint of Deslauriers. The Chevalier Count de Vrecourt is almost certainly the same count who presented himself for service to the American forces under George Washington in early April 1777. He joined the army as an engineer, following discussions with and the recommendations of John Franklin
