Beschreibung:

Kyrenaica, After Euainetos, a 19th Century (?) copy of the famous Euainetos Dekadrachm of Syracuse, obverse a fast quadriga to left, Nike above, cuirass and greaves in exergue, reverse head of Arethusa left circled by dolphins, shell behind neck, 42.67gm. Good very fine Footnote Several features combine to "condemn" this piece: the fian is unusually irregular, 6.7mm at its thickest point, 2.6mm at the thinnest; the obverse field is slightly concave; the appearance of the silver, on this specimen and on those cited later (albeit from excellent photographs) brings to mind a nicely aged Becker. These are, however, the dies R.XIII/F.VI in Gallatin's Syracusan Dekadrachms of the Euainetos Type. This reverse die was known to Gallatin by but one specimen - Copenhagen, cx King Christian VIII collection, now SNG 692. The Dewing collection, with 52 Euainetos dekadrachms, has a further specimen of this variety, catalogue 910, ex "Captain Cave coll." R.XIII is otherwise only used with F.V, known from only two specimens. Gallatin himself had reservations about these coins - "Reverse XIII is unusual: the trophy is full-face instead of three-quarters. . . the grouping of the reins is strange; . . . is used with F.V, which I have examined and believe to be genuine; it is also used with F.VI, in Copenhagen, which has a peculiar head..."
