He served on board the Scharnhorst and was killed in action at the legendary "Battle of the North Cape" on 26. December 1943. The Scharnhorst was sunk that day after a several-hour skirmish by the British Navy. Certificate to 1939 Iron Cross 2nd Class. Issued on 2. July 1940. Originally signed by Vizeadmiral Günther Lütjens (Knight's Cross winner). Certificate to High Seas Fleet Badge. Issued on 12. September 1941.
