Major Arcana and court cards are full-length figures, French card titles, Arabic numerals, Hebrew letters, small symbols appear inside a shield on all cards except Le Fou, square corners. Imagery on the cards varies from traditional Marseilles Tarot, for example, 0 Le Fou is blindfolded and an alligator rises from water, I Le Bateleur's wand has become a caduceus, and The World is designated both numbers 21 and 22. Courts are designated K (king), G (queen), W (warrior), and S (slave), suits are swords, scepters, cups and pentacles with representations on pip cards forming triangles, squares and stars. J. Augustus Knapp (1853-1938) designed the cards in collaboration with Manly P. Hall, director of the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles. Knapp was a talented artist and illustrator, particularly adept in expressing ancient and medieval symbolism in his artwork. Each card is copyrighted J. A. Knapp. Backs are two vertical panels with pharaonic design surrounding anagrams of the word tarot: TARO/AROT/ROTA/OTAR in blue. Size 3 5/8 in. (9.2 cm) high, 2 3/8 in. (6 cm) wide. Complete with original two-piece, top-lid cloth-covered box. Kaplan I, 198.
