Kitab kuwi-kan 'armi aleh Safavid Persia, probably Herat, AH 981/1573-4 AD the well-known story of............ in versified form, manuscript on gold-sprinkled buff or blue paper, 25ff. plus two flyleaves, each with 12ll. of elegant black nasta'liq written in two columns, occasional lines written centrally flanked by polychrome medallions, intercolumnar and interlinear divisions in gold between black rules, gold, green and brown margins between black rules, blue outer rule, mounted on cream, blue or marbled leaves painted in gold with human figures, animals, birds and flowers, headings in white, blue, pink or red on gold cartouches with black scrolling floral sprays, final bifolio with text written between gold clouds of black scrolling motifs, preceeding three sides with text written diagonally between polychrome illuminated triangular panels, (minor smudging and staining, folios loose from binding), opening bifolio with gold and polychrome illuminated heading and text within gold clouds, final bifolio similar, with colophon signed by 'Abd... 'Ali al-Husaini and dated 981, ff.8r., 17r. and 20v. with THREE CONTEMPORARY MINIATURES of polo players in various stages of the game, (some smudging and rubbing), Qajar lacquer binding with panel of various flowers, gold and red borders, (revarnished), red lacquer doublures with an iris, other small flowers and insects (repairs to edges) folio 9¼ x 6in. (23.7 x 15.1cm.) text 5¼ x 3¼in. (13.3 x 8.2cm.)
