[1776], in reply to to an autograph submission by William Eden first Baron Auckland (penal reformer, 1744-1814), as Under-Secretary to Lord Suffolk, Secretary of State of the Northern Department, passing on appeal for clemency by Charles Morton (physician and librarian, 1716-99), on behalf of his servant William Whick who had been condemned to death for theft at the Warwick Assizes, "The Robbing a late Master by means of a false key, I cannot think a proper opportunity for preventing the Execution of the Law...", and an autograph note by Lord Suffolk, "The King, as He always is, is perfectly right. S.", stub in margin, slightly browned.
