Beschreibung:

Autograph Letter Signed (“F.S. Key”), 1 p, legal folio, Georgetown, November 28, 1815, to Thomas Sexton of New York, regarding the liquidation of an estate, page toned and creased, loss from wax seal at center (repaired), signature bold. During the British retreat from Washington, the influential young attorney Francis Scott Key was called upon to negotiate the release of a prominent Washington physician who had been captured by the British. As a result he was detained on an American vessel the night of September 13, watching anxiously the bombardment of the city, and was overjoyed the next morning to see the American flag still flying over Fort McHenry. This letter, written just a year after Key’s famous composition, is a more prosaic effort relaying Key’s frustration with his less than competent colleagues. In part: “I am unexpectedly disappointed in making sale of Wheaton’s life estate in his house which I had directed the Marshall to take in execution & which he had taken & advertised for sale. He had published as the day of sale last ‘Friday the 25th’ –whereas Saturday was the 25th. In consequence of this mistake he will have to advertise it again for 30 days longer.”
