Beschreibung:

KEULEN, Johannes van. Le Nouveau & Grand Illuminant Flambeau de la Mer . Amsterdam: [1684-98?] Parts II and III bound together, 2° (530 x 305mm). Part II; engraved allegoric title, 98pp letterpress with engraved coastal profiles, 41 engraved double-page charts. Part III; engraved allegoric title, 2pp preface with engraved headpiece and tailpiece, 92pp letterpress with engraved coastal profiles, 20 engraved double-page charts. (Some staining and spotting, Part II, title laid down lacking text and margins, Preface lacking, first leaves loose, lower margins or corners repaired, fore-edges folded or torn.) Contemporary vellum (wall-papered over, spine and hinge destroyed at head). Neither of these parts of the French translation of Keulen's Zee-Fakkel correspond exactly with the examples given by Koeman. Part II, lacking the text of the titlepage, is undated, but is apparently the same edition as first issued in 1681 (Keu 82). It has the same number of plates as the first Dutch edition (and in the same order as Keu 57B) but with three additional charts: Zuyder Zee, t'Ras van Conquest en Fontenay and Baÿ van Cadix . Part III is dated on the titlepage 1698, with the 8 written in. It is apparently an intermediary issue to the editions identified by Koeman, containing the text of the first French edition (Keu 102) with the 20 numbered charts of the new setting of the 1699 edition (Keu 103).
