Autograph Musical Quotation Signed ("Jerome D. Kern"), 1 p, 4to, Walton-on-Thames, June, 1909, featuring 4 bars of music and lyrics titled "Little Eva," leaf housed in red leatherette autograph album of Eva Leale (Kern) and featuring other inscriptions and original artwork (see below), some toning and thumbing at edges to leaf, a few album leaves loose, spine perished. KERN'S MUSICAL QUOTATION FOR THE WOMAN WHO WOULD BECOME HIS WIFE, FROM AN EARLY, IF NOT THEIR FIRST, MEETING. In 1910 Jerome Kern was a successful young songwriter living in London, regularly producing hit tunes for producer Charles Frohman. In 1909 he joined a group of friends for a boat trip on the River Thames, stopping at the village of Walton-on-Thames for a drink at the local pub, The Swan. There he met Eva Leale, the proprietor's daughter who was tending bar. Immediately smitten, Kern set out to woo her, and they were married in October of the next year. Kern inscribes this leaf with 4 bars from "Little Eva" (a song he co-wrote in 1907 for the show, The Dairymaids) and the lyrics, "I think that we had better be starting very very soon, Little E-va, don't you?" He adds below, "To Eva Dear, From hers sincerely / Jerome D. Kern / Walton-on-Thames / June 1909." Album also contains: BARRIE, J.M. 1860-1937. Autograph Manuscript Signed ("J.M. Barrie"), 1 p, [Walton-on-Thames], n.d., being an excerpt from Chapter 19 of The Little Minister, some toning and fading. Leaf opposite appears to show an ink and watercolor illustration of Barrie's scene by the artist T. Scottie. Album also includes an inscription from actor BILLY WEST, a drawing and signature of young BETTY KERN, and an ink and gouache portrait of Eva Leale by an unknown artist, among other examples.
