KEATS, John (1795-1821). Endymion: A Poetic Romance . London: Taylor and Hessey, 1818.
KEATS, John (1795-1821). Endymion: A Poetic Romance . London: Taylor and Hessey, 1818. 8° (219 x 136mm). With half-title. Two advertisements leaves for Taylor and Hessey's books, dated May 1, 1818, tipped in at end. (A little light spotting, short closed tear to margin of D5, a few nicks to other page edges.) Green morocco gilt by Francis Bedford triple fillet borders, gilt-panelled spine directly lettered, top edge gilt, others uncut, advertisement leaves entirely uncut (joints lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION, later issue with five-line errata printed on p. [xi]. Keats published his first long poem at the age of twenty-one. Its unfashionably sensual language and sentimental style aroused heavy criticism, some directed personally at the young poet, fuelling the myth that the critics contributed to his premature death. Byron wickedly gave substance to this story in the lines. "John Keats, who was killed off by one critique, Just as he really promised something great . . . 'Tis strange the mind, that very fiery particle, Should let itself be snuffed out by an article" ( Don Juan , Canto XI, lx). Hayward 232; MacGillivray 2.
