Title: Kamawa-sa: Burmese Hand-Painted books on lacquered gilt decorated panels, decorative wooden covers, housed in a large wooden chest with cut glass decoration Author: Place: Publisher: Date: 19th century Description: Pair of Kamawa-sa texts, each hand-painted on lacquered panels. A smaller book, painted on 14 panels which measure 7.5x53 cm (2¾x21"). Each panel with 4 lines of text on each side, except for the two panels at the end. This smaller book has wooden covers with elaborate red lacquer and gilt decoration. The larger book, painted on 16 panels, measures 15x60.5 cm (6x24"). Each panel has 6 lines of text on each side, except for the two panels at the end. This larger book has wooden covers, painted gold, and embellished with semi-precious stones and cut glass decoration. Also includes a string for binding (although not bound at this time), and a cloth covering. Each panel with small hole for binding. All housed in a wooden chest, painted gold, with raised figural decoration, and mounted cut glass decoration. Chest measures 69x25x17.5 cm (27x10x7"). Kamawa-sa texts pertain to the conduct, ordination, and investiture of monks, and were commissioned as works of merit on the occasion of a son entering the monkshood. Each page is made from four folded layers of cotton or china cloth, thickly coated with layers of orange red or brown lacquer which have hardened to create a smooth, firm, shiny yet pliable surface. The ink used to paint the Pali text is made from tamarind seed. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear, a few panels with tiny chip at corner not affecting text; very good. Item number: 252011
