Beschreibung:

Kai Althoff Winter 2002 Aluminium foil, boat lacquer, ink, watercolour, metallic paint and varnish on canvas. 23 3/4 x 19 5/8 in. (60.5 x 50 cm).
Provenance Galerie Christian Nagel, Cologne; Marc Jancou Fine Art, New York Exhibited Freising, Diozesanmuseum Freising, Junge Kunst im Diozesanmuseum Freising: Kai Althoff und Abel Auer, February 10 – April 6, 2003; Boston, Institute for Contemporary Art, May 26 – September 6, 2004 and Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art, September 23, 2004 – January 16, 2005, Kai Kein Respekt (Kai No Respect) Literature N. Baume, ed., Kai Kein Respekt (Kai No Respect), Boston/Miami Beach, 2004, p. 119, no.131 Catalogue Essay Althoff's art confronts one with any number of confessions of desire (some of them embarrassing) and, at the same time, saves one in a kind of oscillation above the abyss. Althoff, who loves breaking rules, acts on unsecured terrain; even the richness of his drawings and paintings favours the provisional. He sees his everyday duty as proclaiming the intermediate steps along the long path of searching....Althoff's interest in the stabilizing and unsettling forces in a male-dominated society cannot be overlooked. His view of the connection between the intestines, the heart and the brain in a spiritual-like act is just as sensitive as it is energetically worldly. Like a catalyser, he keens our sensorium for the gender-specific perception of being a man which is no longer subsumed in the overall human. These subtle defense strategies against forced heterosexual machismo guide the reception along new paths in his art. Kai Althoff transforms criticism of social dominance, agitated by the clouds of post-feminist chastisement, into a lyrical, nostalgic reference system with clear accents on the liberation of the individual from the masculine mark.
