Kadhim Hayder (Iraq, 1932-1985)Warhouse oil on canvas, framed signed "Kadhim Hayder" and dated "84" in Arabic (lower left), executed in 1984 114 x 146cm (44 7/8 x 57 1/2in).FootnotesProvenance: Property from a private collection, London Acquired directly from the Artist by the above in 1984 Bonhams is delighted to present this large and imposing 1984 painting by one of the godfathers of Iraqi Modernism Kadhim Hayder, a work which follows on from his Epic of the Martyr series. This notable series is influenced by the story of the eighth century Battle of Karbala that resulted in the death of the Prophet Mohammed's grandson Hussein Ibn Ali, the third Imam or leader of the Shia Muslims. The 3-day events of the besieging of Imam Hussein's camp and his martyrdom along with 63 of his companions and family members against a large Umayyad army has had great historical significance. This scene depicts two horsemen on their warhorses combatting in the scorching Karabala desert. The horsemen and their two horses seem to merge into one; abstracted and almost incomplete. The absence of colour in the forms alludes to a sense of loss and yet also signifies the immortality of Imam Hussein's soul. The left horse appears wounded as red stain marks indicate the Imam and his soldier's defeat and his formidable enemy's triumph on the battlefield.
