JUSTINIANUS. Codicis hujus argumentum. Tituli, leges, et autentice sub indice triplice alphabetico ponuntur ( ). (Par., A. Boucard for J. Bonhomme, J. Petit and Th. Kerver, 1508). (4), 580, (26) lvs. W. nice woodcut printer's mark of Kerver on ti., 1 large allegorical woodcut depicting the Pope on a throne, num. small woodcut initials, text handsomely printed in red and black throughout. 4º. Cont. spanish blind tooled cf. (Spine dam./partly gone, flap missing, some quires are of a lesser quality paper and therefor slightly browned, inner upper margin of last 60 lvs. a bit dampstained, first and last quire loosening). With four indexes and a preface to the printer by Joh. Chapuis, who also contributed a poem on the eternal value of the work. Until 1530 all 'Codex Justiniani' editions consisted of the first nine books only. A rare edition. Not in Schweiger, not in Adams. The blindtooled leather binding has a crowned lily as device on both covers within compartments; it is of Spanish origin, and old printed Spanish leaves are visible inside the covers. Of the back cover probably an overlapping part with ties is missing: holes for loops on the front cover are still visible. We have here a Mudejar binding in an interesting state: the usual ones are leather over wood, and without flap. See Cockx-Indestege & Storm van Leeuwen in Quaerendo 17 (1987), 250.
