Justin Knowles [1935-2004] - WD..55.ii.03; red, yellow, green, blue,- initialled JK and dated 2002/3 papier collé on graph paper with printed signature and date 2002 42 x 59cm * Biography Justin Knowles [1935-2004] was born in Exeter and after National Service worked in industry and advertising travelling extensively on the continent and in Africa. in the 1960s work focussed on free-standing sculptural shapes, two of which the Arts Council acquired. Mixed exhibitions included John Moores Liverpool in 1965 and Plymouth City Art Gallery in 1967. A major studio fire in 1973 caused the loss of most of his uninsured collection and led to what Knowles called his 'silent time', and after the 1973 show at Waddington Galleries it would be over twenty years before he exhibited again. A chance meeting with Patrick Heron and the art collector David Thomson sparked a return to serious art production in a range of materials He gained a series of awards and there were commissions from both Exeter and Winchester cathedrals, and shows at the City of Bath College, Michael Wood Fine Art in Plymouth, Austin Desmond Fine Art and the Lemon Street Gallery in Truro. The Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and University of Warwick are among the institutions that hold examples of his work.
