Beschreibung:

Julian Alden Weir American, 1852-1919 Anna (The Artist's Wife) Oil on panel 19 x 13 3/4 inches Provenance: The artist Descent to his daughter, Dorothy Weir Young (Mrs. Mahonri M. Young) Descent to her stepdaughter, Agnes Young (Lady Oliver I. Lay) Descent to her son, Mr. Charles Lay, CT, 1982 After Weir's marriage in 1883 to Anna Dwight Baker, she became his favorite figural subject, represented in such life-size realist images such as Against the Window of 1884. This image of Anna demonstrates Weir's conversion to an Impressionist approach. He rendered the figure and her landscape setting with a parallel emphasis on light, animated brushwork, and a generalization of form; at the same time, the clarity of his contours reveals the legacy of his academic training. Anna's quiet presence in this painting expresses her sustained support of her husband's work. Her death in early 1892 after the birth of the couple's third child was devastating to the artist, who would continue to paint her in images expressing her gentle guardianship of the domestic sphere. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
Frame rubbing. There is no visible restoration under UV light.
