A pair of Régence giltwood console tables with profiled Egyptian porphyry tops, each adorned with carved satyr masks flanked by dragons, foliage, fruits, ornaments and richly carved cabriole legs. France, c. 1720. H. 87 cm. W. 116 cm. D. 49 cm. (2) Provenance: Winston Frederick Churchill Guest (1906–1982), sold at the auction house Parke-Bernet, New York, December 2, 1967, Lot 137. Dalva Brothers, New York, May 1968. French & Company sold at Christie’s, New York, Nov. 24, 1998, Lot 28. Christie’s Paris 13. april 2017, lot 124. The sculptor Jules Degoullons was part of the company ‘Société pour les Bâtiments du Roi’ founded in 1699. Together with André Legoupil, Marin Bellan and Pierre Taupin they served the young king Louis XV’s buildings. Similar console to this pair of consoles with the same design and carvings, in a larger version, was made in 1713 for Château de Bercy and is now in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
