Ulysses, Paris: Published for the Egoist Press, London, 1922. 4°, handmade paper, half title, 7 pages of errata at end (a few very light spot marks), later vellum with spine lettered in blue, original blue wrappers lettered in white on upper cover inserted at front and back. NO 1,619 OF 2,000 COPIES. SECOND PRINTING, FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Slocum 18. Some confusion, and much speculation, surrounds the fate of 500 copies of this edition which were sent to the United States. These, numbered serially from 500 to 1,000, were reportedly seized and burned by American Customs on grounds of indecency. However, as Slocum states, "A request for information concerning the destruction of these 500 copies addressed to the Collector of Customs at New York has failed to produce an answer." The mystery is compounded by the occasional appearance on the book market of copies numbered between 500 and 1,000.
