Autograph note signed to William Archer on verso of Ibsen's card, 19 August 1898, expressing delight at the news of Archer's forthcoming visit, and arranging to meet Archer after 7.00pm on Monday at the Grand Hôtel, autograph envelope (envelope torn). Provenance : sale, Phillips London, 12 March 1999, lot 287. H. IBSEN. Nar vi doede vagner . Copenhagen and Berlin: Graebes Bogtrykkeri for Gyldendalske Boghandels Forlag (F. Hegel & Soen) and S. Fischer, 1899. 8° (170 x 110mm). (A few small marks, very light marginal browning.) Original red cloth, upper board and spine blocked in gilt and black, lower board blocked in blind, gilt edges. FIRST EDITION. H. IBSEN. When We Dead Awaken . Translated by William Archer London: Ballantyne, Hanson & Co for William Heinemann, 1900. 8° (180 x 125mm). 32-page publisher's catalogue dated 1900 bound in at the end. Original cloth (extremities lightly rubbed and bumped). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Joyce's first appearance in print was 'Ibsen's New Drama' ( The Fortnightly Review , 1 April 1900), his review of William Archer's translation of Ibsen's Nar vi doede vagner as When We Dead Awaken . Ibsen read Joyce's review, and wrote to Archer on 16 April praising it, praise which Archer relayed to Joyce in a letter of 23 April: 'Henrik Ibsen says [...] "I have read [...] a review by Mr. James Joyce in the Fortnightly Review which is very benevolent ('velvillig') and for which I should greatly like to thank the author if only I had sufficient knowledge of the language"' (R. Ellmann Joyce , p.74). (3)
