Original cloth (extremities lightly rubbed and bumped). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Joyce's first appearance in print was 'Ibsen's New Drama' ( The Fortnightly Review , 1 April 1900), his review of William Archer's translation of Ibsen's Nar vi doede vagner as When We Dead Awaken . Ibsen read Joyce's review, and wrote to Archer on 16 April praising it, praise which Archer relayed to Joyce in a letter of 23 April: 'Henrik Ibsen says [...] "I have read [...] a review by Mr. James Joyce in the Fortnightly Review which is very benevolent ('velvillig') and for which I should greatly like to thank the author if only I had sufficient knowledge of the language"' (R.
