JOYCE, James. Exiles --Ezra POUND. Typed letter signed ('Ezra Pound') to Grant Richards, offices of The Little Review , 5 Holland Place Chambers, London, 7 June 1918, one page, 4to . AN ASSERTION OF HIS ROLE IN THE DISSEMINATION OF THE WORK OF JAMES JOYCE. Pound requests a review copy of Joyce's Exiles , both for The Little Review and for The Future , pointing out that he has just published a three-page article in the latter journal 'in which I could have announced "Exiles" had you though[t] fit to let me know of it', insisting that 'I have done more than anyone else to get Joyce into circulation, and the idea of sending a review copy might have occurred to you. However only dynamite ever draws a publishers attention to the existence of periodicals founded since 1851', and adding that as The Little Review is serialising Ulysses , it may be 'presumed to be as vitally and as profitably interested in him as some of the senile literary souteneurs'. Pound refers to this letter in his letter to Joyce on the same day, 'I hear someone HAS actually seen a copy of "Exiles" published by G. Richards Am writing to him, to see what he has to say for himself'. In the same letter to Joyce, Pound responds enthusiastically to his first sight of the 'Proteus' episode of Ulysses . Exiles was published on 25 May 1918; Joyce had received his own three copies on the day before this letter, and may have prompted the outburst.
