FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Slocum and Cahoon Joyce A33. JOYCE'S RECORDING OF ANNA LIVIA PLURABELLE WITH A COPY OF PSYCHE ATTRIBUTING A PREVIOUSLY-ANONYMOUS ARTICLE TO JOYCE. Joyce only made three recordings; one from Ulysses and two from Finnegans Wake . Of these, 30 copies of the first were pressed and it is 'extremely rare' (Slocum and Cahoon) and the second was never published (due to technical imperfections); thus this is the only one normally offered commercially. The recording, which was made in 1929 for The Orthological Institute , was organised by the mathematician, philosopher and inventor of 'Basic English', C.K. Ogden (cf. 'Anna Livia Plurabelle in Basic' in: Psyche (London: October 1931), XII/2, p.92). Ogden had been asked on Joyce's behalf to write an introduction to Tales Told of Shem and Shaun ; Ogden accepted (see lot 739 for correspondence about the introduction), and subsequently arranged for this recording to be made. Due to Joyce's failing eyesight, 'the pages had been prepared for him in half-inch letters, but the light in the studio was so weak that Joyce still could not read them. He therefore had to be prompted in a whisper throughout, his achievement being, as Ogden said, all the more remarkable' (R. Ellmann Joyce , p.617). In Cyril Connolly's opinion, 'The best way to come to [ Finnegans Wake ] is through the "Anna Livia" recording and the "Tales told of Shem and Shaun"' (Connolly The Modern Movement 87). (4)
