Title: Journal of the Texian Expedition Against Mier; Subsequent Imprisonment of the Author; His Sufferings, and Final Escape from the Castle of Perote. With Reflections Upon the Present Political and Probable Future Relations of Texas, Mexico, and the United States...Illustrated by Drawings Taken from Life by Charles M'Laughlin, a Fellow-Prisoner Author: Green, Gen. Thomas J. Place: New York Publisher: Harper & Bros. Date: 1845 Description: 487 pp. Illustrated with 13 steel-engraved plates (2 are battle plans, 1 of which is folding). 9x5¾, original blind-stamped gray-green cloth. First Edition. According to Graff the author "was particularly bitter toward Sam Houston and believed Houston was responsible for the deaths of those Americans shot as brigands." Jenkins writes: "The most important account of the tragic Texan expedition against Mier and the drawing of the black beans, this is also one of the most vitriolic Texas books." "One of the best war histories of that period, and as fascinating as a romance, with incidents of soldier life on the march, in the battle, and in prison and drawings from life by Charles McLaughlin, a fellow prisoner. Bitter towards President Houston, but gives the reasons, and the reader must judge for himself" - Raines p. 98; Howes G371; Jenkins Basic Texas Books 80; Graff 1643. Lot Amendments Condition: Cloth rubbed, edge wear, tears to spine; hinges cracking throughout, a few signatures loose, folding battle plan creased and with a large tear (nearly separated but complete), mild toning, occasional foxing, scattered stains (affecting some of the plates); a fair to good copy of this scarce and important early Texas title.
