Joshua Brace, Chepstow, an oak longcase clock the thirty-hour duration birdcage movement having striking the hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the eleven-inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with Roman hour numerals, Arabic five-minute numerals and fleur-de-lys half-hour markings, engraved either side of VI o'clock with the maker's name Joshua Brace, Chepstow, the matted centre engraved with c-scroll decoration and ho-ho birds and with a date aperture, with c-scroll cast-brass spandrels to the four corners, the flat-topped oak case with a shallow swan-neck pediment, raised decoration to the top frieze, three-quarter pillars the hood with gilt-wood capitals, a wide trunk door and plain base, height 217cm * Biography Joshua Brace is first recorded as working in Chepstow from 1752 until 1763 having originally been from Martley in Worcestershire, where he had been apprenticed to Richard Munkland, a gunsmith and clockmaker. He then moved along the River Severn to Lydney in Gloucestershire prior to 1780.
