Appeared first at Paris in 1717. - With 151 (of 152, 7 folded) engraved plates. - Contemp. leather (somewhat rubbed). - The richly illustrated account of Tournefort's travels into the Near East - from Greece to Asia Minor, through the Black Sea region, Armenia and the Caucasus to Persia - "in which he found a great many new species of plants" (Hunt), contains a biography of the author by Lauthier and an Elogium by Fontenelle. The plant classification developed by the French botanist and professor of medicine Tournefort (1656-1708) remained the standard throughout Europe until superseeded by the nomenclature introduced by Linnaeus in 1753. He took with him the painter Aubriet "to enrich the collections of the king and those of the Academy. His rigid determination to stick closely to his scientific aims prevented him from noting many things that a more naive traveller would have described" (Cox). - Occasionally browned. Overall a fine copy.
