A MAGNIFICENT SELECTION OF SUPERB CALIFORNIAN WINES FROM JOSEPH PHELPS VINEYARDS Joseph Phelps Vineyards was founded in 1972 by Joe Phelps after a successful career in the construction business. The Napa based winery produces 100,000 cases a year, the various brands in the portfolio including Insignia, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and a range of Rhône-style wines. Insignia is the winery's flagship wine with the first vintage produced in 1974. A blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux grape varieties, Insignia was the first Californian Bordeaux-blend to be released under a proprietary label. In recent vintages the majority of grapes in the blend are drawn from estate-owned vineyards in the renowned Stag's Leap and Rutherford Bench districts. The 45 acre Backus vineyard has always produced exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon with its superb location and iron-rich soil. Winemaker Craig Williams describes it as "... a Grand Cru vineyard, producing wines with distinctive flavours of chocolate, berry and mineral." From the outset of production, Joseph Phelps have been producing Rhône-style wines. The first vintage of Syrah in 1974 was arguably the first time that this varietal was made commercially available in California. Since then a range of wines have been added to the portfolio including Viognier and the highly-regarded Châteauneuf-du-Pape style blend "Le Mistral". Phelps' finest white wine is the Ovation Chardonnay. Drawn from vineyards blocks in Carneros, small-cluster clones of Chardonnay are used to produce a wine with a high degree of fragrance and flavour. Low yields and a rigorous selection process make for a high-quality Chardonnay with cool-climate style and great flavour and balance.
