JOSEF KOUDELKA Gypsies . New York: Aperture, 1975. Oblong quarto (270 x 299 mm). 60 black and white photographs. (Light yellowing in the margins.) Sewn sheets, black endpapers (small chip to front endpaper, light wear); cloth folding box. Provenance : Josef Koudelka (inscriptions, one of these recording the gift to:) -- Lee Jones. FUSCO, Paul. 'Josef Koudelka'. Gelatin silver print (150 x 222 mm), titled and signed in the margin, copyright stamp on the verso, in a cloth chemise, laid into the box with the book. RARE PRE-PUBLICATION PROOF COPY, WITH THE TITLE-PAGE IN KOUDELKA'S HAND, AND INSCRIBED TO LEE JONES, New York Bureau chief of Magnum, Koudelka's agency: "Lee, many thanks, Josef". "It was the publication of Gypsies in 1975 that sealed his reputation as one of the finest photographers still using the humanist documentary mode" ( The Photobook ). Koudelka had become a member of Magnum just the year before, but his relationship with Jones goes much further back, at least as early as 1969 when Lee Jones sold Koudelka's images of the events in Prague the year before for the then huge sum of $20,000. With a signed gelatin silver print portrait of Koudelka ca. 1991 by his Magnum colleague Paul Fusco. The Open Book , pp.304-05; The Photobook , p.230. (2)
