RARE PRE-PUBLICATION PROOF COPY, WITH THE TITLE-PAGE IN KOUDELKA'S HAND, AND INSCRIBED TO LEE JONES, New York Bureau chief of Magnum, Koudelka's agency: "Lee, many thanks, Josef". "It was the publication of Gypsies in 1975 that sealed his reputation as one of the finest photographers still using the humanist documentary mode" ( The Photobook ). Koudelka had become a member of Magnum just the year before, but his relationship with Jones goes much further back, at least as early as 1969 when Lee Jones sold Koudelka's images of the events in Prague the year before for the then huge sum of $20,000.
