DescriptionProperty from a Dutch Noble Collection
Joost Cornelisz. DroochslootUtrecht 1586 - 1666A village square with people eating outside an inn, and children playing with dogs
signed with monogram and dated centre left: JC.DS / 1653oil on panelunframed: 49.9 x 66.4 cm.; 19¾ x 29 in.framed: 63.9 x 83.4 cm.; 25⅛ x 32⅞ in.Condition reportThe panel is uncradled, flat and stable. It is formed of two horizontal planks, and there are slim wooden insertions at each end of the join on the reverse, suggesting that the join may have begun to open at some point, but has been carefully repaired. - fine lines of retouching at these points are visible in raking light. Otherwise the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned retouching, and further reveals older fine retouchings through the sky; the lower half of the composition appaears to be relatively untouched, though inspection is impeded by the milky varnish. The painting is in overall fairly good condition.
