Autograph manuscript fragment (possibly from his diary) of Samuel Johnson.
A three-panelled, small 4to leaf tipped-in to the larger sheet, with second slip carrying provenance note (156 x 258mm). Consisting of a six-word quotation (headed “Porph.” at top) in Greek likely from the Neo-Platonist philosopher Porphyry, a cryptic seven-word phrase in English below. Condition: some soiling, top edge slightly frayed, the whole tipped-in to large sheet. Provenance: An identified hand below Johnson’s writing: “A MS of Dr. S. Johnson- given to me by Mrs. [Betsy] Barber- May 18, 1804.” ; A further provenance note (in a later unidentified hand) tipped-in to the larger sheet: “From Dr. Harwood. Mrs. Barber was the widow of Francis Barber, Dr. Johnson’s faithful servant.”; George Milne sale Christie’s, New York, 5 December 1991, lot 266, $850, C.A.Stonehill.
