JOHNSON, Charles (pseudonym?). A General History of the Lives and Adventures of the Most Famous Highwaymen, Murderers, Street-robbers, &c. To which is added A Genuine Account of the Voyages and Plunders of the most notorious Pyrates. London: for J. Janeway, in White-Fryers, and ... the booksellers of London and Westminster, 1734. 2° (573 x 221mm). Printed in double column. Title in red and black, engraved frontispiece and 25 plates, most by J. Basire after W. Jett and J. Nicholls. (Frontispiece repaired at lower margin, further repairs, mainly marginal, but Ff2 and 4T1 with closed tears through text, plate opposite p. 117 with repair slightly affecting image, occasional soiling and staining, final two leaves shorter at outer margin, index leaf lightly washed.) Straight-grained red morocco gilt by F. Bedford, sides with thistle device and outer panel incorporating a motto and the initials 'RT' and 'HB', inner panel with the heads of four horses, a second motto and double monogram employing the same initials with others, gilt spine compartments, satin doublures embossed in gilt with repeated thistle and lion pattern, gilt edges (a little rubbed at extemities, scuff mark on front cover). FIRST EDITION OF THIS FAMOUS COMPILATION, uniting the most notorious names in the early eighteenth-century underworld. It consists of selections from two works, Alexander Smith's History of the Lives of the Most Noted Highway-men and Captain Charles Johnson's own General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates . The latter was attributed to Defoe by Hutchins, Moore and Novak, but the attribution has been questioned by Furbank and Owens. 'Best edition of this singular work, seldom found in good condition' according to Lowndes who states that it 'appeared originally in 73 weekly numbers at twopence each, or 20 monthly parts at eightpence'. The present copy is made up of weekly numbers, and the imprint is one of two recorded variants. Lowndes III, 1214.
