Publishers Bassett and Chiswell republished John Speed's popular 1611 atlas, The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain in 1676, and they included a new section as a supplement, titled "A Prospect of the most Famous parts of the World." The section contained maps of the English colonies of New England, Virginia, and Maryland. The Map of Virginia and Maryland was the ninth, and last, derived from John Smith's map of the region, which was created in 1612 and remained widely copied through the last quarter of the 17th century. Condition: Typical folds, and some wrinkles in map; small separation at center, horizontal fold; few light spots.
