John Marshall Gamble (1863-1957)California Wildflowers signed 'John M. Gamble' and titled (on the reverse) oil on canvas laid to board 30 x 40 in. framed 37 x 47 in.FootnotesProvenance Bonhams, Los Angeles, California and American Paintings and Sculptures, August 5, 2008, lot 213. Proceeds to benefit "The Edward M. Dowd Foundation." Exhibited Sacramento, Senate Art Loan Program, California, 1996 - November 1999. John Marshall Gamble, influenced by French Impressionist painter, Claude Monet was captivated by the California wildflowers, particularly poppies and lupine. Similar to the interests of many of the California Impressionists, the beautiful blooms of flowers along the hillsides, coasts and meadows of California provided Gamble with a limitless bounty of subject matter. Gamble focused on the poppy fields that thrive in the hills of both Northern and Southern California. In his essay Images of The Land of Sunshine: California Impressionism, William H. Gerdts notes that Gamble sent a work entitled The Golden Poppy to the Louisiana Purchase Universal Exhibition in St. Louis in 1904. ¹ That same year he received a commission to paint a large scene for the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. After the 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco, Gamble settled in Santa Barbara where his works became increasingly vibrant. California Wildflowers, depicts an arching field of poppies and lupine under a bright and open sky. The bold colors of the flourishing blooms set against the graduated hills emphasize the iconic beauty that is so symbolic of the California landscape. ¹ William H. Gerdts, "Images of The Land of Sunshine: California Impressionism", All Things Bright and Beautiful: California Impressionist Paintings from the Irvine Museum, The Irvine Museum, Irvine, California, 1998, p. 19.
