John Lennon A revealing typescript letter, signed, September 1971, to George Martin/Richard Williams in reply to an interview with George Martin published in Melody Maker , 4th September, 1971, Lennon's letter, [the text of which was subsequently published in part in Melody Maker , September 25th, 1971] gives an insight into the extent of Lennon's anger at some of Martin's remarks ..I don't see anything 'schizoid' in having more than one emotion, though you obviously do. When people ask questions about 'What did George Martin really do for you?', I have only one answer, 'What does he do now?'...It's not a put down it's the truth... Lennon bitterly refutes a number of points discussed by Martin in the interview ...Now on to Revolution No.9, which I recorded with Yoko plus the help of Ringo, George and George Martin It was my concept, fully. For Martin to state that he was 'painting a sound picture' is pure hallucination... Of course, George Martin was a great help in translating our music technically when we needed it, but for the cameraman to take credit from the director is a bit too much... Lennon signing off ...Don't be so paranoid, George, we still love you. John (and Yoko who was there).. adding four post scripts covering various topics alluded to by Martin in his interview, such as the production of Let it Be , Lennon's defence of his own and McCartney's choice of partner and Lennon's claim that ...At least 50 of the lyrics of Eleanor Rigby was written by me in the studio and at Paul's place... , the letter annotated by Lennon in red felt pen at the top of the page with a sarcastic reference to Martin's interview ..from sentimental john in New York, September 71 , 1p
