Smith and Son, and W. Flackton, and London: B. Law, Richardson and Urquhart, 1773. 4to. (quire D short at bottom margin, final leaf browned), red moroccco gilt by R.H. Kiernan. Provenance : Ford (contemporary signature on half title) -- Leslie Gutteridge (sold Lawrences, Crewkerne, 15 Janaury 2004, lot 37). FIRST EDITION. This spirited reply to Duncombe's Surry Triumphant again employs the metre of "Chevy Chace", and describes both the match at Bishopsbourne Paddock, which "Surry did the victory gain By Lumpey, Fortune, Art and Rain", and Kent's victory in the return match at the Vine. The introductory stanzas contrast the vices of the town with the rural innocence of cricket, and the poem is a celebration of the game rather than a violently partisan piece. EXTREMELY RARE. There is one copy in the M.C.C. library. The on-line English Short Title Catalogue locates copies only at BL (2), National Library of Scotland and St. Andrews University. Allen 5; Padwick 2061.
