Beschreibung:

Joe Brainard American, 1942-1994 Ted (Portrait of Ted Berrigan) Ink on paper 13 x 10 inches (33.02 x 25.4 cm) Provenance: The artist Ted Berrigan Gift from Ted Berrigan to Harris Schiff Thence by descent to the current owner Beloved writer Ted Berrigan considered himself a "late Beat," as he came to prominence in New York's "Second Generation" of poets, which was just preceded by the Beat Generation. Followed to New York by college friend and lifelong collaborator Joe Brainard the two remained major forces in each other's lives, until Berrigan's passing in 1983. Both Berrigan and Brainard were indicative of the cross-collaborative attitudes of New York in the mid-60s, as it became natural for artists, writers, dancers, photographers and filmmakers to team up, not to mention Allan Kaprow's multi-media Happenings. Possibly their most notable project was Bean Spasms from 1967, a group effort also including friend Ron Padgett, a seminal tome that comprised text and illustration done by the group, blatantly disregarding personal attributions, while embracing experimentation and exploration. This portrait of Berrigan, captures the illustrative cartoon nature in all its inky blackness that Brainard was famous for. Berrigan later gifted the work to good friend (and notable New York School poet in his own right) Harris Schiff, who, like Brainard, was a collaborator with Berrigan, famously working together on the 1979 conceptual literary project Yo-Yo's with Money. C
Tipped to backing at all four corners. Overall very good condition.
