JIRI SEIFERT (1932–1999) Saturn's Stone Starting price: 25 000 CZK (943 EUR) Hammer price: 44 000 CZK (1 660 EUR) Description dimensions: 36 x 31,5 cm (h x w) period: 1992, Bohemia, Prague The artist is one of the most important Czech sculptors of the latter half of the 20th century. Due to his political opinions, however, he remained on the fringes of the Czech art scene after 1968. In 1952-58 he studied in Professor Bedřich Stefan's studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design. After graduating he moved to Liberec, where he worked until 1970 and created the foundation stone for Ještěd tower. In 1965 he participated in the Biennale des Jeunes de Paris and in 1968 he was included in a contemporary Czechoslovak sculpture show at Musée Rodin. In the early 1990s Seifert started to actively exhibit again and participate in local and international symposia. Typical materials for Seifert are stone and wood, with metal used only rarely. This work is part of a collection of stone sculptures created in the 1990s, in which the artist investigated the relationship between mass and the surrounding space. Perforations in heavy, hard and firmly formed stone mass produces a dialogue with the open space. Obtained from the collection of the artist's friend, sculptor Vladimír Preclík. Slivenec marble.
