In 1980 he founded a group with fellow artists Walter Dahn Hans Peter Adamski, Peter Boemmels, Gerhard Kever and Gerhard Naschberger sharing a studio in the Deutz district of Cologne. His artistic community quickly became known as “Mülheimer Freiheit” for the street in which they held their studio. The milieu paid witness to other contemporary artistic movements, among them the figurative works of Enzo Cucchi Sandro Chia and Francesco Clemente in Italy and David Salle and Julian Schnabel in New York. Dokoupil positioned himself amongst the Postmodernist scene by working exclusively in one thematic series at a time, inventing new iconography and abandoning it after a few months of devotion to the subject. The present lot, from the Pacifier Series, painted in 1984, derives from one of these passionate bouts, in which Dokoupil works the small canvas with symbols of childhood (pacifier) and adulthood (cigarette), virginal existence and the temptations faced by stimulants. The Pacifier Series is one of the artist’s most admired work-groups, of the seven known paintings belonging to this series all reside in private German collections. Read More
