Jim Poolman (British) Final Throes of Dragon Tableaux 18.9 tonnes, 152,000 whole and cut horse shoes 5m high, 14m wide, 8m deep On view at: The Sculpture Park A farmer's son, Jim Poolman was raised around Windsor and spent the better part of his career in agricultural and mechanical ventures. He always maintained a strong interest in art and design, sculpting mainly in steel. Self-taught welder Poolman spent over twelve years and 10,000 hours creating this unique and monumental work, the largest sculpture he ever made with only the help of a forklift truck and hand-built supports. Poolman created various textures using both whole and cut horse shoes, provided by farriers in Hampshire. 'The idea for the dragon came from a book on some research into the Nile crocodile. I found that a cross-section profile of the crocodile could be replicated with the small pieces of shoe, with each ring then placed on the other to form the body and that a great scale could be achieved in this medium. This looked very effective and the idea grew wings (literally) and mutated into a dragon.' This dynamic landmark piece has been an icon of The Sculpture Park since its completion in 2017.
