Caracas, 1845. Spanish. Translation to Spanish of a study book for Jewish youth, written by S. Cahen and originally published in France. The book is divided into "lessons", each lesson consisting of questions and answers explaining the principles of Judaism and its values. An article dealing with the history of the Jewish people opens the book, written by the translator Angel J. Jesurun. Two handwritten pages (Spanish) are bound at the end of the book. The first is titled "Morning Prayers" and the second - "Evening Prayers". Even though there is evidence as to Jewish settlement in Caracas (capital of Venezuela) in the 17th century, during the Spanish colonial rule, only very few Jews emigrated to the city, mainly due to fear of the inquisition and the rule prohibiting non-Catholics from settling in the area. In 1819, after the declaration of independence of the Great Columbian Republic (present day Ecuador, Columbia, Venezuela and Panama), Jews were granted freedom of religion and the right to settle in the area. Groups of Jews arrived and settled in Caracas and the Jewish congregation started to establish itself in the city. The study book presented, published in 1845, indicates that a Jewish congregation and Jewish educational institutes were already firmly established in the city. It seems that this is one of the first books published in Caracas concerning the Jewish religion. XIV, [1], 16-50 pp [book is missing pages at the end. Originally should be, most probably, 16-66 pp]. + [2] handwritten pages. 17.5 cm. Fair condition. Stains, tears. Signature on title page and inscriptions in pen in several places. Restoration with pasted paper throughout the book (on the lower part of all the pages as well as to corners and margins of some of the pages). Dark stain on top of pages throughout the first 15 pages. Cloth binding, stained and worn.
