A NAVAL SURGEON'S APPOINTMENT. Jefferson appoints George Colegate "a Surgeon's mate in the Navy"; he is "to observe and follow such Orders and Directions...as he shall receive from me or the future President...or his superior Officer...according to the rules and discipline of the Navy..." An uncommon appointment.
