U.S.," red circular "Washington City Jun 27," datestamp and "Free" handstamp, seal hole and a minor tear at a fold intersection. JEFFERSON FORWARDS A LETTER FOR BARON HUMBOLDT "Th: Jefferson salutes Genl. Muhlenberg and asks the favor of him to have the inclosed letter delivered to Baron Humboldt if not gone; & if gone, to reinclose it to Th: J....". Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), the noted scientist, had been traveling in North and South America since 1797, gathering material for his monumental Voyages de Humboldt et Bonpland (1805-1834). He visited Jefferson in early June 1804, just before he embarked for Europe, initiating thereby a long and fruitful correspondence between the two men.
